Thousands of kilometers in height, these space tethers are towering vertical cities. The 21st and 22nd centuries saw a substantial build-up of pollution from the use of fossil fuels. Thankfully, the advent of newer technologies slowly shifted how we powered our civilization. Unfortunately, the worst had yet to come; the atmosphere and biosphere rapidly destabilized. In a united effort, these mega structures were built, tethering us to our home world but allowing us to reside in Low Earth Orbit. The base of the tethers supported terraforming 'world engines' cleaning the atmosphere and seeding clouds, hence the development of large storms centered among the tethers base.
